St. Patty's...and Californium

Another St. Patty's is here!  Is it weird that my mom and I observe it EVERY year?  We're always dressed up in green despite the fact that most Irish people I know don't even bother.  Nevertheless...lots of people were very festive at university today!

For some weird reason, the College of Physical Sciences (physics+chemistry) was having a St. Patrick's Day sale today and by mid-day the university was inundated with green hats and pins and necklaces and...wow...weird way to make money for science clubs but OK.

My chem prof tried to pull an Irish accent and made terrible drinking jokes while even my biodiversity prof tried to join in the fun...by explaining how glacial advances and retreats in the ancient past have caused a lack of snakes in Ireland. Fail.

Well...I had my LAST chemistry lab today - wohoo!  It was on chemical reaction kinetics and it was super easy! We just mixed a bunch of stuff and recorded the times at which they started changing colour...

While we were waiting for the magical colour changes to happen, my lab partner and I played chemistry hangman!  The element she chose was "Californium"...pretty tricky!!

My chem TA was wearing green and just I was going to get my results signed, another TA dropped by to visit and he was wearing green too.  They were talking about their plans to get drunk and drink lots of booze tonight...just lovely...

So that was my St. Patty's, 2011.  Pretty green, pretty science-y!

  1. I love holidays like St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, etc. because I get to wear themed outfits that are kind of ridiculous. Today I was walking around Orlando in leprechaun knee socks I bought in Ireland (http://cf.mp-cdn.net/7b/ba/45c6e6b9baf34585149ce9bdfc7f.jpg), among other green articles of clothing.

This day really helps my green eyes - proof of my Irish heritage - stand out! ;)

Each one salutes me as he goes,
And I my childish plumes
Lift, in bereaved acknowledgement
Of their unthinking drums.
