I was going to our campus Subway to eat lunch when a pamphlet was suddenly thrust into my hand. The cover sported pictures of defenseless pigs and chickens trapped behind metal bars. I caught a glimpse of the title: "Even if you like meat"...
Oh perfect...just before I was going to have a scrumptious sub chock full of chicken or beef or ham...
So obviously I didn't have the heart to continue reading it before I ate my lunch. About a week after I had realized that it was still in my backpack...and the gruesome curiosity got a hold of me...so I read it.
To say the least, it was disturbing.
I was very upset and had a very difficult time eating meat after that, but of course, as days passed, eating meat didn't seem such a big deal anymore.
But reading about these poor animals enslaved in factory farms, treated horrendously and inhumanely really breaks my heart. I can't stand things like this.
Of course I know that food animals aren't raised on sunny red farms anymore...but it's alway so terribly shocking to realize the extent of our human greed...and cruelty.
The pamphlet was provided by the association of vegans or something like that. Basically, the moral of the story was...become a vegan! But even just being aware of where your food comes from and reducing your meat intake are less drastic steps that could make a difference.
But in this crazy, modern world of excessive human dominance, where we use technology and science to constantly achieve supreme, unheard-of evils, is there anything we wouldn't do to get what we want?

Each one salutes me as he goes,
And I my childish plumes
Lift, in bereaved acknowledgement
Of their unthinking drums.
