Monday night we had a huge HUGE thunderstorm with hail and it knocked us out of power and water for a whole day! My mom and I decided to buy me some new glasses since we both had a rare afternoon off together.
The lady at the store very quickly helped us choose the glasses. She was an attractive brunette in her twenties, maybe thirties? She was very nice and had a good eye for good glasses. :)
Then something funny happened when she was typing my mom's e-mail address. The last letter was "i" and she typed in an "e".
My mom was like, "No, it's an 'i', not an 'e'..."
And she was like, "I"? She drew a blank and asked another employee to come over. "Which one's 'i'?" And the other person pointed it out for her.
My mom and I were super confused. I thought she might be one of those blonde bimbos who couldn't read and who dyed her hair brown in order to make herself seem more intelligent.
After everything was finished, she explained, "English isn't my first language either!" Well, even though my parents are Chinese, English is my first language because I was born in Edmonton!
Anyway...turns out she'd only been in Canada for 9 months and was a new Dutch immigrant! My mom was really surprised that she spoke perfect English, but Europeans are pretty multi-lingual...reminds of Diane Kruger, that German actress who speaks perfect American English and French...
I have a friend who was a German exchange student in my Grade 11 French class. He spoke good English, perfect French, German...AND Polish since his parents are originally Polish. And he wants to be a diplomat!
Pretty interesting stuff. :) Just wanted to share that after my loooooong absence from this blog...life has been busy! Today I played with babies, watched middle school kids cha-cha, and performed for a tea party!
"My mom and I decided to buy me some new glasses..." Are you sure you are not new to canada??? its kindda funny!!
ReplyDeleteI'm obviously better at writing in riddles and iambic pentameter than in actual English...:P
